A M King Completes Sizeable Expansion at South Windsor ALDI Warehouse

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT—A decade after A M King designed and built a 500,000-square-feet food distribution facility for ALDI in South Windsor, Connecticut, the fully integrated Design-Build firm has completed a sizeable expansion and renovation on the 100-acre lot—bringing the total to 670,000 square feet. The completion of this project makes way for additional cold storage and dry warehouse space, providing an opportunity for the fast-growing grocer to increase its fresh, healthy and convenient product offerings and boost growth in the Northeast region.

The perishable expansion phase - completed in September 2018 -- added 70,000-square-feet of cold storage space and included a 105,000-square foot renovation of existing perishable space. In addition, A M King coordinated the truck apron expansion for trailer parking and installed a Quell fire suppression system, VFDs on equipment and a white PVC roof.

In the recently completed Phase 2, A M King extended the dry warehouse space by 100,000-square feet with 32' clear racking, constructed high-end dock equipment that supports eight new dock doors and expanded the truck apron to allow for improved onsite traffic flow.

The final phase involved interior renovation to offices and employee welfare areas; development of two new parking lots; cut-ins for five new dock locations; an expanded and fully-renovated break room and a 33 percent increase in equipment battery charging capabilities.

During the course of the phased project, A M King coordinated a facility-wide photovoltaic solar expansion (and gave structural capacity for a future renewable energy system) and LED retrofit, as well as installation of a 1,750-kW generator and a 285,000-gallon fire water tank. Shrewd planning transformed excess top soils into on-site wildlife habitats.

"The scope of this expansion and renovation project was extensive," says Senior Project Manager Carl Morse. "We quickly and successfully adjusted construction plans to meet owner needs and help the company maintain operations."

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
