Leading Puerto Rico Terminal Selects Navis N4 to Modernize Operations and Increase Productivity

N4 technology will take terminal to the next level and help it compete with the best terminals around the globe

Oakland, CA—April 24, 2018—Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation and provider of operational technologies and services that unlock greater performance and efficiency for the world's leading organizations across the shipping supply chain, announced that Luis A. Ayala Colón Sucrs., Inc. has selected to implement N4, along with Navis Professional Services and Navis Training Services at its terminal. The partnership with Navis aims to improve operations at its San Juan, Puerto Rico-based terminal and continues to provide its customers with high quality service. The order was booked in Cargotec's 2018 first quarter order intake.

Since it was created in 1938, the family operated terminal, Luis Ayala Colón, has emerged as one of the largest terminals in Puerto Rico. It has an annual TEU of 230,000 and serves a larger volume of Puerto Rico's international cargo needs than any other terminal in the area. Located in the Puerto Nuevo Port Zone of the Port of San Juan, the Ayala Family has built a strong reputation during its 80 years in operation, and has selected N4 as the next step in optimizing its operations and helping it remain competitive with terminals on an international stage.

"Our company has always been in the forefront of technology. Since the early days of computing availability, we've employed state-of-the-art software while developing our own programing for the last four decades," said Hernan F. Ayala-Parsi, President, Luis Ayala Colón terminal. "With Navis we will continue to use the best software available, which can be customized for our terminal and operations needs to enhance service to our customers - both the container lines, and ultimately, the cargo originators, receivers and their respective truckers."

The terminal has cited inventory management, optimizing container location and equipment control during discharge and loading as its main operational challenges prior to N4 implementation. Beyond daily operational challenges, the terminal faced the additional hurdle of keeping essential cargo moving in the wake of Hurricane Maria, which wrecked havoc on Puerto Rico's infrastructure. As its TOS provider, Navis will support Luis Ayala Colón in efficiently handling cargo as the island recovers from the storm and also reach its goals of increased terminal production and efficiencies in both vessel and terminal operations and improved terminal inventory management. Following the upgrade, the terminal expects an improvement in vessel production between eight to 10 percent as well as lower turnaround times of less than 20 minutes per container transaction. In addition, N4 will improve reporting times for container discharge and loading to principal lines to real time and improve billing activities and invoice production immediately following completed vessel operations.

"N4 will provide Luis Ayala Colón with the technology to help the terminal adapt and keep up with the evolving ocean shipping landscape and meet its production and operational goals," said Martin Bardi, Vice President & General Manager, Latin America, Navis. "We are excited to partner with a terminal with deep roots in Puerto Rico and help ensure it is engrained in the economic success of its community for years to come."

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
