Computer maker tries "crowdsourcing" for product design

Psion Teklogix recruits customers, partners, and developers to help with product design and development.

For many of us, the concept of "design by committee" has negative connotations—a kind of R&D version of "too many cooks spoil the broth." Psion Teklogix, however, sees it differently.

The mobile computer maker has created a network of more than 200 developer partners around the world to spur the development of new applications and designs for Psion's products. To facilitate collaboration and information sharing among these partners, the company earlier this year launched an online community called Ingenuity Working. Nearly 900 individuals in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America are now connected through that community.

You might wonder why the company would choose this approach to development instead of keeping its product information proprietary. In a blog post on the community's website (IngenuityWorking.com), Todd Boone, Psion's director of corporate communications, discusses the company's decision to take the open source route. Psion Teklogix believes the open source business model is the way of the future because it's driven by customers' needs, not internal corporate imperatives, he writes. Boone adds that success will come when a community of customers, partners, and developers—rather than marketing and engineering—makes product decisions.

The approach appears to be working. The company says its new Omnii XT10 handheld computer incorporates upgradeable and interchangeable modules that were developed by Psion's own engineers and the Ingenuity Working community.

In addition to an array of blogs, the Ingenuity Working website offers a number of items likely to interest the technology-minded. They include twitter feeds, a partner directory with links to member companies, and discussion strings on everything from Linux/Android applications to RFID and hardware design. (Sample posting: "I tried to flash the firmware on a Workabout Pro G2 to the latest CE5.0 but now the G2 is stuck at 'image not digitally signed' prompt at boot. Anybody have any ideas on how to get past this?") A new feature, called "Ingenuity Live," allows partners to show the solutions they have developed using Psion's products.

East and Gulf coast strike averted with 11th-hour agreement

Shippers today are praising an 11th-hour contract agreement that has averted the threat of a strike by dockworkers at East and Gulf coast ports that could have frozen container imports and exports as soon as January 16.

The agreement came late last night between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) representing some 45,000 workers and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) that includes the operators of port facilities up and down the coast.

Logistics industry growth slowed in December

Logistics industry growth slowed in December due to a seasonal wind-down of inventory and following one of the busiest holiday shopping seasons on record, according to the latest Logistics Managers’ Index (LMI) report, released this week.

The monthly LMI was 57.3 in December, down more than a percentage point from November’s reading of 58.4. Despite the slowdown, economic activity across the industry continued to expand, as an LMI reading above 50 indicates growth and a reading below 50 indicates contraction.

Demand for warehouse space cooled off slightly in fourth quarter

The overall national industrial real estate vacancy rate edged higher in the fourth quarter, although it still remains well below pre-pandemic levels, according to an analysis by Cushman & Wakefield.

Vacancy rates shrunk during the pandemic to historically low levels as e-commerce sales—and demand for warehouse space—boomed in response to massive numbers of people working and living from home. That frantic pace is now cooling off but real estate demand remains elevated from a long-term perspective.

Sick and Endress+Hauser say joint venture will enable decarbonization

The German sensor technology provider Sick GmbH has launched a joint venture with the Swiss measurement technology specialist Endress+Hauser to produce and market a new set of process automation solutions for enabling decarbonization.

Under terms of the deal, Sick and Endress+Hauser will each hold 50% of a joint venture called "Endress+Hauser SICK GmbH+Co. KG," which will strengthen the development and production of analyzer and gas flow meter technologies. According to Sick, its gas flow meters make it possible to switch to low-emission and non-fossil energy sources, for example, and the process analyzers allow reliable monitoring of emissions.
