HERE Technologies and AWS Unveil Insights on Fleet Management Trends and Technology Innovations
Survey of T&L decision-makers globally, conducted by ABI Research, identifies key barriers to adopting new fleet management solutions.
HERE Technologies, the leading location data and technology platform, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), has released a new whitepaper that sheds light on the current sentiment of transportation and logistics (T&L) professionals, the critical challenges faced by fleet managers, and the innovative solutions driving the industry forward.
This extensive global study, conducted by ABI Research, includes responses from 300 T&L decision-makers across the Americas, EMEA and APAC regions, highlighting the shifting priorities and challenges faced by companies managing fleets. The majority of respondents come from medium to large enterprises, with fleets ranging from 100 to 1,000 vehicles, representing a cross-section of an industry going through significant technological transformation.
Fleet management is critical to logistics operations, especially in today’s challenging environment with driver shortages, fluctuating fuel costs, shipping delays and regulatory pressures. Companies are increasingly digitizing their fleet management operations to enhance decision-making and operational efficiency.
Key findings of the global survey conducted by ABI Research:
Digital Transformation:
More than 82% of fleet managers reported that less than half of their shipment tracking is manual documentation (paper logs, spreadsheets, etc.).
Nearly 74% of respondents have a digital transformation strategy in place, with an additional 18% having already digitized their operations.
Criteria for Software Selection:
The main barriers to adopting new fleet management solutions include cost and lack of internal expertise. Additionally, fear of disruption to existing processes were noted as significant challenges.
Most companies favor off-the-shelf software solutions (46%), while 40% use a hybrid approach, combining off-the-shelf and in-house developed solutions. Only 14% rely entirely on in-house developed software.
Customizable solutions are highly valued, with 90% of respondents indicating their importance. The ability to integrate their own data into fleet management solutions is seen as a key differentiator.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
The top KPIs tracked by fleet managers include on-time delivery (73%), lower fuel costs per vehicle (67%), and regulatory compliance (63%). These KPIs are identified as crucial for achieving business objectives and enhancing customer satisfaction.
Respondents cited vehicle utilization and dwell time as most in need of improvement.
Maximizing Vehicle Usage:
Respondents stated vehicle utilization KPIs are frequently unmet, impacting overall operational efficiency.
Real-time tracking of trucks and shipments, demand/load planning, route optimization, and fuel management are identified as the most important components of fleet management solutions.
Data Utilization:
While data availability is high, companies struggle to consolidate and leverage this information effectively.
Better data capabilities and actionable insights are top barriers to achieving supply chain visibility.
Revenue and Operational Efficiency:
Increasing revenue and improving operational efficiency are top technology investment drivers for 55% and 52% of respondents, respectively.
Streamlining logistics operations is crucial in the face of labor shortages, price inflation and geopolitical pressures.
Sustainability and Future Needs:
More than half of the respondents have specific sustainability goals, and 77% plan to adopt electric vehicles (EVs) within the next 3-6 years.
Data analytics, route planning, and optimization were highlighted as key areas for future investment to improve fleet visibility and operational efficiency.
Ryan Wiggin, Senior Analyst at ABI Research: “Our research has highlighted the critical shift toward adopting advanced technologies in fleet management to tackle continued operational pressures. Fleet managers are increasingly digitizing their operations but continue to face challenges with utilizing available assets and fully leveraging the data they have available. Comprehensive fleet management solutions underpinned by effective mapping and location data are crucial to continue to drive profitable and sustainable fleet operations.”
Severin Bredahl-Banovic, Vice President of Solution Architecture at HERE Technologies: "We are committed to providing cutting-edge mapping and location data solutions that address the pressing needs of fleet managers. Our advanced routing and traffic analysis capabilities are designed to optimize vehicle utilization, enhance ETA accuracy, and support diverse fleets, including the integration of electric vehicles. As the industry continues to evolve, HERE remains focused on delivering reliable, data-driven insights that empower fleet managers to achieve greater efficiency and sustainability in their operations."

Methodology
The survey conducted by ABI Research targeted professionals responsible for fleet management software decisions. More than 70% of respondents were from companies in manufacturing, courier/express/postal (CEP) delivery, general freight and last-mile delivery, on-demand mobility (ride-share) and food delivery, and retail/wholesale sectors. The majority of these companies employ between 1,000 and 20,000 employees, with over 50% managing fleets of 100 to 1,000 vehicles.
Greer, SC—Creform Corporation, a manufacturer of unique products for material handling structures has designed and built a stationary flow rack to be used lineside for an assembly line. The flow rack can be virtually used in any industry and for most application and is particular useful holding an optimal amount of inventory at the point of assembly which maximizes floor space. It also can prevent excessive inventory which is one of the seven waste considerations in lean manufacturing. This flow rack contains an “L shaped” slide pipe and skate wheel conveyor.
Creform sales engineers worked closely with the customer to design this customized solution to meet their specific needs. The result is an optimized flow rack where parts and materials are strategically organized at the point of use. This setup enables workers to quickly locate the components they need, reducing downtime and saving time. Creform offers multiple flow lane options and can create virtually any hybrid solution.
The gravity flow rack assists first-in, first out (FIFO) inventory management. ensuring that materials are used in the order that they are received. The compact design allows for lineside placement, minimizing floor space requirements.
The pictured unit is 49" W x 50" D x 63" T, can hold up to 1200 lb. and is built using Creform 28 mm pipe which provides flexibility and reusability for the user. However, higher capacity and custom rack sizes and configurations are possible with Creform’s 42mm product line of pipe and joints. Further, the 42mm product line can integrate seamlessly with the 28mm system.
The flow rack features Five supply levels and one return level on the bottom for product presentation in a modified stair-stepped setup. The flow rack design utilizes Creform’s low friction L shaped gray colored slide pipe for the top 4 levels. The L shaped slide pipe provides containment on both sides to secure the boxes effectively in each lane. Creform’s highly efficient skate wheel conveyor is utilized on the bottom supply level and on the return level. Both of these levels have the conveyors located evenly spaced to accommodate many different sized boxes.
Creform skate wheel conveyors and L shaped slide pipe are suitable for both plastic returnable totes as well as cardboard boxes. Both products provide a long and reliable life span.
Each of the cart’s levels can be repositioned with only simple tools. With this design, each level can be repositioned or whole flow rack customized with only simple tools. This greatly simplifies adjustment.
Creform offers flow racks in a wide variety of pipe colors, and accessories can include information sheet holders, label holders, tool storage, hooks to hang tools and other supplies. As well as built with feet, rather than wheels. Creform Structures can be built for ESD for anti-static applications. Des Plaines, Illinois – Loren Swakow, Managing Director of NOBLELIFT North America, has announced his retirement effective January 31st, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of unprecedented growth, innovation, and strong relationships built over nearly a decade at the helm of the company.
Swakow joined NOBLELIFT in October 2016, tasked with the challenge of bringing an unknown brand into the highly competitive American market. At the time, NOBLELIFT had no dealer network and minimal brand recognition. Over the course of eight years, Swakow's strategic leadership and expertise have led to remarkable success, driving average annual growth of 43%. Today, NOBLELIFT is supported by a professional dealer network spanning the entire country, with sales growth consistently outpacing the industry, a true testament to Swakow’s vision and determination.
Swakow’s leadership also played a key role in expanding NOBLELIFT's footprint into Canada by helping to establish NOBLELIFT Canada. His unwavering belief in the brand and dedication to fostering partnerships were critical to this growth.
Reflecting on his tenure, Swakow remarked, “It takes a great team to do what we did in eight years, and that’s what we have—A Great Team! I have always believed in fostering open communication, creating a culture of trust, empowering individuals, leveraging diverse perspectives, and prioritizing collaboration. We have all worked very hard, and I am proud of them all.”
Swakow’s career in the material handling industry began long before his time at NOBLELIFT. He co-founded a lift truck dealership with his brother, representing brands like Komatsu, Mitsubishi, Tailift, and TCM. After decades of success, they sold the dealership and related businesses in 2012. Swakow also played a key role in the wider industry, serving as a founding member and Presidentof the Chicago Industrial Truck Dealers Association and as President of MHEDA (Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association) in 2004. His strong belief in the power of networking was critical to the formation of NOBLELIFT North America.
"MHEDA has always been the optimal association for networking," Swakow stated. "The connections and insights I gained through MHEDA were invaluable as we built NOBLELIFT North America from the ground up."
The succession plan for Swakow's role has been set, with the announcement of his successor scheduled for January 7th, 2025. Through January, Swakow will collaborate closely with his successor to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities and to share his insights and guidance.
“We are grateful for Loren’s remarkable contributions to NOBLELIFT North America,” stated Wendy Mao, CEO at Noblelift Intelligent Equipment Co., Ltd. “His vision and passion have been instrumental in shaping our success. We are committed to building on the strong foundation he has established.”
Swakow’s dedication to excellence, his ability to inspire trust, and his relentless pursuit of success will leave a lasting impact on the material handling industry. While the company expresses enormous gratitude for his leadership, it is clear that his legacy will continue to guide NOBLELIFT on its upward trajectory.
