Beckhoff Drafts Jason Biwer to Business Development Team Roster

Jason Biwer recently joined Beckhoff USA as Business Development Leader for the central region. Biwer brings more than 25 years of automation industry experience to the role along with a passion for solving today’s toughest engineering challenges using breakthrough technologies. In this role, he will develop new sales opportunities with current customers and prospects throughout the upper Midwest to further accelerate Beckhoff market share growth. Biwer is based out of the company’s Milwaukee office in the Global Water Center and reports to Steve Boelte, Regional Director – Central.

A Milwaukee native, Biwer’s career began with a variety of application engineering roles. He worked at the system integrator Allan Integrated Control Systems, focused on SCADA design for massive water treatment facilities; then KHS Group, a filling and packaging machinery OEM headquartered in Germany; and finally, the automation distributor Price Engineering. While at Price, Biwer moved from controls engineering into business development and sales management, working up to Managing Director of Automation.

“Automation is personal for me. Growing up, I saw how my father’s physically demanding job at a steel tubing factory exacted an immense toll on him. Applying automation means solving challenges by giving people tools to avoid dangerous, dirty and repetitive tasks. Here, Beckhoff can help,” Biwer said. “Right now, global economic shifts plus advances in technology present manufacturing companies with unique opportunities to develop intelligent machines that adapt to rapidly changing consumer demands as well as labor and logistics challenges. Beckhoff’s powerful technology and exceptional team are ideally positioned to help customers meet their most difficult challenges today and tomorrow.”

Biwer earned a Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering from Marquette University.

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
