Next Generation Hooding Technology Meets Today’s Productivity and Transit Protection Needs

From pharmaceutical equipment to e-commerce merchandise, effectively packaging pallets for transit demands solutions as unique as your product. Shrink hooding, conventional stretch wrapping and stretch hooding are the three most common wrapping solutions, each with their relative strengths and ideal applications within the transit packaging pipeline. Comparing these directly can lead to a highly detailed and granular discussion, so in the interest of providing succinct analysis let’s focus the lens in on one topic: Stretch hood wrapping technology. What are its benefits, which companies are more likely to achieve the fastest gains, and what are its latest advancements?
Many companies and organizations are moving to hooding technology. Traditionally popular in Europe, hooders are gaining a significant foothold in North America. A range of national and regional players in CPG, Food and Beverage, E-Commerce, Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, and Health, Beauty and Personal Care are upgrading and automating their end-of-line pallet packaging with hooding technology. This is alongside continued adoption in corrugated, building materials and chemical industries.

What is driving this change? First, hooding technology provides an unmatched ability to protect palletized products from the elements and potential tampering, while also stabilizing loads for transport. The most advanced stretch hooders offer 5-sided protection and a throughput capacity of up to 200 pallets per hour. Second, significant cost-savings can be achieved through reduced consumable use, lowered energy consumption, and simplified material handling. Third is adaptability. Stretch hooders have the ability to be fitted with several film rolls, allowing them to wrap multiple load sizes and types with greater variations more quickly. The most advanced stretch hooders can host a variety of film patterns, including fully closed hoods, film sleeves, short hoods, and film reinforcement capabilities.

The recent generation in stretch hooder technology features the replacement of traditional hydraulics with electrically operated stretch frames and machine frame movements. The electric frame allows for reduced safety-area fencing, providing the flexibility of a smaller footprint to maximize valuable production floor space and the ability to be placed closer to a facility’s perimeter. The most advanced of this new generation also feature a steel-reinforced timing belt movement, providing greater reliability and lower maintenance costs, and greater compatibility with requirements in CPG, Food and Beverage and Pharmaceutical operations. This also reduces dependence on lubrication which is required for typical chain drive lift systems. Going to a belt-driven frame makes hooding solutions more compatible with clean operations that don’t allow exposed, lubricated components.

Bridging the gap between the newest electric units and the older technologies can be a challenge, but it highlights the importance of consumable and equipment interaction and performance. While easy to treat as a second thought, selecting the right film consumable for your operation requires due diligence at least equal to that of new equipment purchases. Multiple film options, including transparent, colored, perforated and printed, are available.
When going about the film selection process, there are several considerations to keep in mind. Along with the requirement for the film to provide the needed load containment, other factors include: Is brandability an issue? Is transparency important to optimize barcode-readability? Will your pallets be stored outside and demand films that protect from moisture?

On a global scale, stretch hooding technologies and investment have risen to greater levels of interest and attention. They offer great protection in transit-packaging applications, are adaptable and productive at end-of-line, and the newest generation provides lower physical footprints and maintenance savings. They don’t tell the whole story of an organization’s automation journey, but they do provide a valuable chapter in the quest for increased efficiencies, product protection, and throughput. The integration of technologies, software systems, and production lines is a necessity.

Creform stationary lineside flow rack provides for an organized flow of materials

Greer, SC—Creform Corporation, a manufacturer of unique products for material handling structures has designed and built a stationary flow rack to be used lineside for an assembly line. The flow rack can be virtually used in any industry and for most application and is particular useful holding an optimal amount of inventory at the point of assembly which maximizes floor space. It also can prevent excessive inventory which is one of the seven waste considerations in lean manufacturing. This flow rack contains an “L shaped” slide pipe and skate wheel conveyor.

Creform sales engineers worked closely with the customer to design this customized solution to meet their specific needs. The result is an optimized flow rack where parts and materials are strategically organized at the point of use. This setup enables workers to quickly locate the components they need, reducing downtime and saving time. Creform offers multiple flow lane options and can create virtually any hybrid solution.

Hamilton Caster Appoints Andrew D. Stamp as Director of Sales

Hamilton Caster Appoints Andrew D. Stamp as Director of Sales

Hamilton Caster & Mfg. Co., a 117-year-old industry leader in heavy-duty industrial casters, proudly announces the enhancement of its legacy Super Endurance Caster (SEC) series, now rebranded as the Spinfinity® Super Endurance Caster (ZFSEC) series. In addition, Hamilton is introducing the all-new Spinfinity® Super Endurance Dual Caster (ZFSEC2) series, both of which feature a new heavy-duty 'V-Style' seal designed to elevate performance in the most demanding environments.
The Spinfinity® Super Endurance Caster (ZFSEC) series replaces Hamilton’s legacy SEC series, setting a new benchmark for kingpinless caster design in extra heavy-duty applications. Central to this upgrade is the heavy-duty 'V-Style' seal, which offers protection against dirt, debris, and moisture. This advanced sealing technology ensures consistent performance and extends the life of the caster, making it the ideal choice for environments where reliability is critical.
"With the introduction of the V-Style seal, the ZFSEC series is engineered to withstand the harshest conditions while providing zero-fix, 100% maintenance-free operation," said Mark Lippert, president of Hamilton Caster. "This enhancement allows our customers to minimize maintenance costs and downtime, further solidifying Hamilton’s reputation for durability and dependability."
The ZFSEC series retains the robust construction that Hamilton is known for, including a swivel top plate and inner raceway made from forged steel, providing superior strength for shock conditions. Sealed precision ball bearings are also now standard in all wheels, contributing to the maintenance-free performance of the series. Notably, the zerk fittings have been eliminated, as the new design makes them unnecessary.
Complementing the ZFSEC series, Hamilton introduces the all-new Spinfinity® Super Endurance Dual Wheel Caster (ZFSEC2) series. This dual wheel series is engineered for extra heavy-duty applications where stability, durability, and maintenance-free operation are paramount. Like its counterpart, the ZFSEC2 series leverages the new 'V-Style' seal, ensuring that each caster is fully protected against contaminants that could compromise performance.
Combined with sealed precision ball wheel bearings, this caster series ensures zero-fix, 100% maintenance-free performance. The dual-wheel configuration enhances stability and allows for a lower overall height, offering a perfect blend of strength and maneuverability.
Casters in both series are finished in a durable HAA polyester platinum powder coat and are available in a wide variety of wheel types, allowing for customization based on application needs.
