Saddle Creek Announces New CEO Mark Cabrera

Lakeland, Fla., July 29, 2019 (MindShare Strategies Media Services) - Saddle Creek Logistics Services (www.sclogistics.com) announced today that Mark Cabrera, currently the company's chief operating officer (COO), will assume the role of CEO effective immediately. Cabrera succeeds Cliff Otto, who will retire at the end of July. The changes are in line with the company's succession plan which was announced in July 2017.

Cabrera, who joined Saddle Creek in 2001, was named COO in July 2017 and charged with overseeing ongoing business operations for the company. Previously, he held the role of chief financial officer (CFO), serving as chief strategy officer and supervising all finance and human resource functions. Prior to joining Saddle Creek, Cabrera spent 15 years in financial roles in a variety of industries for companies including Arthur Andersen LLP, GTE, National Insurance Services and Reeves Steel, Inc. He is a member of the International Warehouse Logistics Association Insurance Company (IWLAIC) executive committee and serves on Lakeland Economic Development Council's High Skill Investors Group.

Otto retires after 18 years at Saddle Creek. He joined the company in 2001, became president in 2007 and CEO in 2013. With his guidance, the company has achieved significant growth, expanded geographically and broadened its portfolio of services. Today, the company provides a full range of logistics services - omnichannel fulfillment, warehousing and transportation - and operates more than 20 million square feet of space in 45 locations nationwide with the help of over 4,000 associates.

"Under Cliff's leadership, Saddle Creek has experienced steady revenue growth every year and become one of the largest family-owned 3PLs in the country. We are extremely grateful for his strategic guidance and passion for excellence," said Scott Thornton, Saddle Creek chairman. "With Mark's thorough understanding of our business and commitment to upholding our service-driven culture, we are well positioned to continue our strategic growth trajectory and provide exceptional solutions for our clients. Mark has the enthusiastic support of the Thornton and Lyons families as he assumes his new role."

"I am honored to take the helm and build on the strong foundation Cliff has helped establish," said Cabrera. "This is an exciting time to be in the logistics industry. I am eager to lead the company forward and embrace new opportunities - while keeping a firm foothold in the tradition of service excellence that company founder David Lyons established more than 50 years ago."

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
