PSR and the Shipper Impact Will Be Focus At Midwest Association of Rail Shippers Meeting

July 15-16 Summer Meeting to be held in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

CHICAGO—June 27, 2019 (James Street Media Services)—Freight rail shippers concerned about the impacts of precision scheduled railroading (PSR) will gather July 15-16 for the annual Summer Meeting of the Midwest Association of Rail Shippers (MARS).

"The biggest wildcard for rail shippers and receivers today is the effect of PSR," said MARS President Tom Surma. "On top of that, as railroads shift to the PSR model, the onus of railcar ownership and storage is falling to the shipper."

The MARS Summer Meeting will be held at the Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

It will feature key transportation executives and experts, including:
• James Squires, chairman, president & CEO, Norfolk Southern;
• John Murphy, senior vice president international policy, US Chamber of Commerce;

• a panel discussion of PSR impacts featuring—Rob Cook, senior manager, Rail Operations, Bunge, Inc.; Bruce Ridley, vice president, Packaging Corporation of America; and Gail Wernette, manager, Rail Rates, Nutrien.

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.
