Former UPS EVP and Chief Commercial Officer Alan Gershenhorn Joins 8VC as Advisor

Global Transportation Leader Brings Expertise to 8VC's Logistics Portfolio

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--8VC, the venture capital fund dedicated to solving real-world problems through industry transformation, today announced Alan Gershenhorn, former Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of United Parcel Service, Inc., (NYSE: UPS), has joined the firm as an advisor. Gershenhorn will lend his expertise as a global transportation and logistics leader to 8VC's portfolio companies, which include Alloy, Boom, Deliverr, Freightwaves, Joby Aviation, LoadDocs, Platform Science, project 44, Trackonomy, and Vector.

"We share the same vision around transforming the industry, and I look forward to working with 8VC and the innovative companies in its portfolio."

Gershenhorn joins 8VC's logistics advisory team alongside Chris Sultemeier, former EVP of Logistics at Walmart Stores (NYSE: WMT), and Shaleen Devgun, CIO and EVP at Schneider (NYSE: SüdR), adding his decades of experience to the firm's network of advisors.

At UPS, Gershenhorn led and participated in numerous transformational strategies at UPS - helping to reshape the company from a $3.3B U.S. centric ground small package delivery company, when he first joined, to a $65B leader in global logistics and supply chain solutions. In his role as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, he directed strategy, M&A, marketing, sales, e-commerce, product development, government affairs, and key growth strategies across the enterprise. He also led and oversaw the acquisition, integration and ongoing operations of Marken and Coyote Logistics. Gershenhorn joined UPS in 1979 and held executive roles in the U.S. and the international arenas, including Senior Vice President and President UPS International; President UPS Supply Chain Solutions Global Transportation and Shared Services; President UPS Supply Chain Solutions Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa; and President UPS Canada. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Beacon Roofing Supply, Transportation Insight, a portfolio company of Gryphon Investors, and Worldwide Express, a Ridgemont Equity Partners portfolio company.

"We believe the logistics industry is ripe with opportunity to transform the supply chain and modernize it for the future," said Jake Medwell, founding partner at 8VC. "One of the ways we support our founders and entrepreneurs for unparalleled success is by connecting them with world-class industry leaders, like Alan. His deep knowledge and expertise in global transportation and logistics bring tremendous value to our portfolio and community."

"8VC is uniquely focused on leveraging technology for industry transformation, and there is a massive opportunity in the transportation, aviation and logistics space," said Gershenhorn. "We share the same vision around transforming the industry, and I look forward to working with 8VC and the innovative companies in its portfolio."

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.
