Fortna® Hires Dr. Hector Carlo to Lead Science Team for FortnaWES™

READING, PA (July 20, 2018) - Fortna®, The Distribution Experts®, announces the hiring of Dr. Hector Carlo to lead its Science Team, responsible for developing all algorithms for its FortnaWES™ warehouse execution software. FortnaWES™ was built to deliver exceptional flexibility, agility and responsiveness to enable complex, high-volume omni-channel distribution operations. It is built upon existing platform services that combine the best-of-breed integration, technology, real-time controls and system services that Fortna clients rely on.
Dr. Carlo brings with him an impressive research record of developing algorithms to support distribution centers and cross-dock terminal operations for improved efficiency. He has published over fifty articles in these and related fields since receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

He is also the co-founder of a software development company that provides a school management software package and a fleet management package. The software was used by the entire Puerto Rico public school system to enroll 390,000+ students for the 2017 school year.

Dr. Carlo joins Fortna from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, where he taught and conducted research in production, distribution and logistics and served as Director of the Lean Logistics Lab. He was awarded the Industrial Engineering Outstanding Faculty Award multiple times. He served as a teacher and consultant in Puerto Rico, the mainland United States and Europe.

"We are very happy to have someone with Dr. Carlo's capabilities and accomplishments join Fortna. Building on the strong foundation that has been built, he will have an immediate impact on the algorithms we develop for our FortnaWES™ software and provide additional support for continuous innovation as we model distribution operations in the design process," said Dr. Russ Meller, Vice President, Solution Design and R&D at Fortna.

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.
