GENERAL COLIN POWELL ADDED AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR 2018 MATERIAL HANDLING & LOGISTICS CONFERENCE

GENERAL COLIN POWELL ADDED AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR 2018 MATERIAL HANDLING & LOGISTICS CONFERENCE

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN - MAY 14, 2018 — Dematic, a leading global supplier of integrated automated technology, software and services to optimize the supply chain, announced today former Secretary of State, General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.), as their featured keynote speaker for the 2018 Material Handling & Logistics Conference (MHLC) in Park City, Utah, September 9-12, 2018.

For over 50 years, Powell has devoted his life to public service. Having held senior military and diplomatic positions across four presidential administrations, Powell's deep commitment to democratic values and freedom has been felt throughout the world. He began his career by joining the ROTC program while attending City College of New York and discovered his calling. He received a commission as an Army second lieutenant upon graduation in 1958 and went on to serve in the United States Army for 35 years, rising to the rank of Four-Star General.

From 1987-1989 Powell served as President Ronald Reagan's National Security Advisor. He served from 1989-1993 as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for both President George H.W. Bush and for President Bill Clinton, and was not only the youngest officer and first ROTC graduate to ever serve in the position, but also was the first African American to do so. During his time as chairman, he oversaw 28 crises to include the Panama intervention of 1989 and Operation Desert Storm in the victorious 1991 Persian Gulf War. Under President George W. Bush, Powell was appointed the 65th Secretary of State, unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

"Every year we work to identify a keynote speaker who will inspire our attendees," stated Scott Watts, Chief Executive Officer, Dematic, Americas. "General Colin Powell is a perfect fit. His extraordinary career and genuine skills as a communicator are sure to resonate with those of us who seek insights to success. We promise the evening will be a rare opportunity for all."

Now in its 33rd year as the premiere educational event in the supply chain industry, the 2018 MHLC will feature over 50 sessions designed by top experts to provide professionals with the tools they need to ensure success, for themselves and their companies.

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
