Turning a Concept into a Reality

Turning a Concept into a Reality

Fishers, NY: Gorbel® Inc. has partnered with Paradigm Hyperloop to help them prepare their entry for Elon Musk's SpaceX Hyperloop Competition on August 25-27 in Hawthorne, California. As a Gold Sponsor of the team, Gorbel® has contributed to the future of pod transportation and the overall success of the Paradigm Hyperloop team.
Paradigm Hyperloop is an international team of students from Northeastern University and the Memorial University of Newfoundland. The team aims to prove the viability of air based levitation for use in high-speed applications by building a prototype Hyperloop pod capable of reaching 200mph. The Hyperloop is a conceptual fifth mode of transportation popularized by Elon Musk in 2013. The Hyperloop consists of levitating train like vehicles, called pods, which travel through low-pressure vacuum tubes. When combined, the low friction nature of the levitating pods and the low drag environment of the vacuum tube make for a high level of efficiency for transportation. The long term vision for the Hyperloop concept is to connect major urban areas that are between 400 and 500 miles apart. Hyperloop systems would offer the transport of goods and cargo over that distance in as little as 30 minutes for a fraction of the cost of traditional air travel. The Hyperloop Competition II focuses on maximum speed. It will feature new and returning student teams, some of which have already built and tested their pods in the first competition, which was back in January of this year.

Gorbel® provided the Paradigm Hyperloop team with a brand new 2-ton Gantry Crane free of charge to solve the lifting needs the team required. Gorbel®'s Gantry Crane:
• Allows the team to lift the pod, so they can work on suspensions, brakes, lateral control and air bearing installation.
• Allows for easier lifting for transportation purposes.
• Reduces expensive short term equipment related costs for the team.
• Helps in the safety of team members when working on the pod and lifting the vehicle.

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
