South Carolina - May 31, 2017 - In the high throughput distribution environment of perishable produce, Ceres Fruit Growers looked to increase its storage capacity while maintaining full product accessibility and improving air circulation. The mobile racking solution, Poweracks by Storax, has helped Ceres Fruit Growers increase storage capacity; decrease operating costs; and improve product shelf life.

"For over twenty years, we have been utilizing Poweracks in our produce distribution facilities - which has allowed us to increase our practical storage capacity by 75%-80% and decrease our energy costs due to improved air circulation," said Deon Schickerling, Electrical & Refrigeration Manager at Ceres Fruit Growers. "We have numerous aisles moving simultaneous which provides not only full accessibility to each pallet location, but the speed we need in our high turn environment."

"Increasing storage capacity within cold storage environments is not only relevant but necessary," said Todd Jessup, principal of FLEXSPACE, the North American distributor of Storax solutions. "Energy costs are a major contributor to cold storage facilities' overall operating expenditures. By eliminating and replacing static access aisles with moveable aisles, facilities can increase their storage capacity by 100% within the same building footprint. The level of efficiency and productivity also increases with unobstructed access to every product storage location while decreasing the number of forklift touches."

Perishable cold storage environments balance maximizing storage capacity with temperature and humidity control. When air circulation is optimized, product is able maintain its shelf life and in the case of Ceres Fruit Growers, set-point temperature was raised - saving energy and operating costs.

FLEXSPACE | Storax is proud to showcase Poweracks and its high density storage solutions at the Global Cold Chain Expo (GCCE) , Booth 5331, taking place at McCormick Place in Chicago; June 13-15, 2017. Learn how distributors like Ceres Fruit Growers are maximizing their capacity and increasing revenue without jeopardizing product quality or employee productivity.

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
