MODEX 2016: Smart technologies from Swisslog for fully automated light goods handling

Newport News, VA, January - Visitors to MODEX 2016 in Atlanta, GA from April 4-7, will experience first-hand the latest warehouse automation innovations from intralogistics specialist Swisslog. The company will demonstrate new picking technologies integrated with advanced robotics.

The Swisslog booth at MODEX will feature a large, dynamic exhibit that will demonstrate the now familiar goods-to-person technology, AutoStore, as well as a fully automated picking station and a new high-performance shuttle system.

Humans and robots working side by side
Swisslog will present its groundbreaking solution for state-of-the-art light goods handling, Automated Item Pick (AIP). This fully automated picking station teams humans with robots, enabling direct cooperation between man and machine, with no safety fence required. The core component of this solution is KUKA's highly sensitive LBR iiwa lightweight robot. At the Swisslog booth, visitors will be able to see this new solution in action. AIP intelligently complements the AutoStore and other light goods systems from Swisslog and delivers accelerated and significantly improved picking performance.

New Cyclone shuttle technology for top-notch performance
In response to the challenges faced by the retail, pharmaceutical, and food & beverage industries, Swisslog has developed a new shuttle technology that offers outstanding performance, flexibility and reliability. Representing the latest generation of shuttle systems, this technology is a natural part of a smart logistics solution that relies on the intelligent "autonomy" of material flow control. The new shuttle system from Swisslog will be one of the centerpieces of the Swisslog booth at MODEX where it will be presented for the first time.

Swisslog to feature FORTE
Acquired by Swisslog in April, 2015, systems integrator FORTE will also exhibit within the booth offering expertise for those companies whose automation requirements include traditional picking, conveyor or sortation systems. FORTE is a leading warehouse automation and warehouse execution software (WES) company focused on optimizing distribution centers for many of the world's fastest-growing companies. FORTE's business model brings a completely objective, equipment agnostic approach to planning, designing and implementing automated material handling systems.

Future-proof solutions
"In a world that is rapidly evolving, scalable and flexible solutions that allow your business to grow and respond are of utmost importance," comments Markus Schmidt, Senior Vice President, Swisslog Warehouse & Distribution Solutions Americas. "Swisslog is dedicated to enabling our partners to grow rapidly so that they can feel secured in their ability to deliver to their customers now and in the future.

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
