Coyote upgrades digital freight platform to meet shipper demands

"Carrier of Choice" program rewards service of top performers, 3PL says.

Third party logistics provider (3PL) Coyote Logistics today released a package of enhancements to its digital freight platform, saying it is designed to provide shippers with greater reliability assurances and higher levels of service from the carriers they work with.

This "Carrier of Choice" upgrade will match the evolving customer expectations of shippers, while rewarding the best-in-class service of top carriers, Chicago-based Coyote, a unit of UPS Inc. said.

"With the health of the freight market contingent on mutually beneficial relationships between shippers and carriers, we know there is no one-size-fits-all solution for their unique needs and challenges," Coyote CEO Jonathan Sisler said in a release. "Coyote considers these enhancements a true win-win that supports both parties."

The changes are critical in an environment where more carriers are competing over less freight than in 2018, raising the challenge of finding the perfect load, the company said in a June 25 blog post. "Consistently delivering excellent service requires a lot of your time, energy and resources. In a soft market like we have in 2019, there are even more obstacles for carriers to overcome," Coyote said.

The Carrier of Choice Program, which is launching as part of the digital freight platform update, rewards high-performing carriers with access to benefits like instant load booking via Coyote.com and the CoyoteGO mobile app, the company said. Recognized carriers - who will fall into either Pack Carrier, Elite Carrier or Carrier of Choice tiers, based on meeting or exceeding service performance parameters - can also receive faster payment in as little as two days, in addition to easier access to bids and tendering.

In turn, shippers will benefit from increased levels of service and greater visibility across Coyote's network of 70,000 carriers. Additionally, shippers can now take advantage of new digital freight platform features to improve their supply chain operations. These include My Facilities, which houses over 100,000 facility reviews crowdsourced by drivers, and API integrations for real-time spot quoting and tracking, Coyote said.

"While shippers' service expectations are constantly evolving, Coyote's commitment to delivering a superior experience to customers remains unchanged," Sisler said. "Our goal is set shippers and carriers up for success in any market - whether it be deflationary, like today, or inflationary, as the Coyote Curve predicts it will be next year. By leveraging insights drawn from customer feedback when building our new service-based programs and digital freight features and grounding them in a commitment to exceptional service, we are able to accomplish this goal."

Geodis goes airborne to speed cycle counts

As a contract provider of warehousing, logistics, and supply chain solutions, Geodis often has to provide customized services for clients.

That was the case recently when one of its customers asked Geodis to up its inventory monitoring game—specifically, to begin conducting quarterly cycle counts of the goods it stored at a Geodis site. Trouble was, performing more frequent counts would be something of a burden for the facility, which still conducted inventory counts manually—a process that was tedious and, depending on what else the team needed to accomplish, sometimes required overtime.

NMFTA to release proposed freight classification changes this week

The less-than-truckload (LTL) industry moved closer to a revamped freight classification system this week, as the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) continued to spread the word about upcoming changes to the way it helps shippers and carriers determine delivery rates. The NMFTA will publish proposed changes to its National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system Thursday, a transition announced last year, and that the organization has termed its “classification reimagination” process.

Businesses throughout the LTL industry will be affected by the changes, as the NMFC is a tool for setting prices that is used daily by transportation providers, trucking fleets, third party logistics service providers (3PLs), and freight brokers.

Gartner: some enterprises could turn tariff volatility to their advantage

With the new Trump Administration continuing to threaten steep tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China as early as February 1, supply chain organizations preparing for that economic shock must be prepared to make strategic responses that go beyond either absorbing new costs or passing them on to customers, according to Gartner Inc.

Logistics real estate rents dropped in 2024 after decade of growth

Global logistics real estate rents drooped in 2024 as an overheated market reset after years of outperformance, according to a report from real estate giant Prologis.

By the numbers, global logistics real estate rents declined by 5% last year as market conditions “normalized” after historic growth during the pandemic. After more than a decade overall of consistent growth, the change was driven by rising real estate vacancy rates up in most markets, Prologis said. The three causes for that condition included an influx of new building supply, coupled with positive but subdued demand, and uncertainty about conditions in the economic, financial market, and supply chain sectors.
