Transport and logistics giant FedEx Corp. said today it will move the headquarters of its FedEx Logistics arm to a larger location within the city of Memphis, Tenn., in April 2020.
FedEx Logistics provides air and ocean freight forwarding, supply chain solutions, specialty transportation, cross border e-commerce technology services, customs brokerage, and trade management tools and data.
The move will allow the division to accommodate growing staff size and spatial needs by upgrading from a space with 154,000 square feet to just under 200,000 square feet, the company said. FedEx Logistics will consolidate multiple locations and nearly 700 team members into the new location over the next several years as it moves into the facility, which is the former Gibson Guitar factory building.
Consolidating operations in a single location is the latest evolution for the division, which FedEx sees as a key way to meet booming business in cross-border e-commerce services.
Last month, the parent company restructured its specialized logistics and e-commerce units to fall under the FedEx Trade Networks Inc. unit, saying the move would help direct more resources to the fast-growing segment. That strategy affected FedEx's Custom Critical rush-delivery operations, FedEx Supply Chain, FedEx Trade Networks Transport & Brokerage, and FedEx Cross-Border.
Also in January, the company rebranded the unit's name from FedEx Trade Networks to FedEx Logistics, saying the new name better describes its ability to meet its customers' increasingly complex and industry-specific supply chain, transportation, value-added services, and brokerage needs.
