A. Duie Pyle opens 21-door service center in Maryland

Transportation and supply chain solution provider A. Duie Pyle said today it has opened a service center and begun construction of an integrated logistics center in Maryland, saying the two facilities add capacity, reduce travel times, and allow customers to regionalize their supply and distribution networks.

Both facilities are located in Hagerstown, Md., near Interstates 81 and 70 as well as nearby rail yards, the West Chester, Pa.-based firm said.

The 21-door service center is integrated with Pyle's commercial transportation resources and provides an immediate increase in capacity for customers, according to the company.

The integrated logistics center, which is scheduled to open in 2020, will include more than 80 cross-dock doors for expedited loading and unloading, along with a 200,000-square-foot warehouse and a fleet maintenance garage. This site will also provide warehousing with same- and next-day distribution, assembly and value-added project capabilities, final-mile delivery options, consolidation and de-consolidation, and integration with Pyle's less than truckload (LTL), brokerage, custom dedicated, and warehouse and distribution solutions.

Together, the properties will allow the company to add further capacity and offer a complete range of integrated transportation, warehousing, and distribution services under one roof, John Luciani, A. Duie Pyle's COO for LTL Services, said in a statement.

Securing the last mile

Although many shoppers will return to physical stores this holiday season, online shopping remains a driving force behind peak-season shipping challenges, especially when it comes to the last mile. Consumers still want fast, free shipping if they can get it—without any delays or disruptions to their holiday deliveries.

One disruptor that gets a lot of headlines this time of year is package theft—committed by so-called “porch pirates.” These are thieves who snatch parcels from front stairs, side porches, and driveways in neighborhoods across the country. The problem adds up to billions of dollars in stolen merchandise each year—not to mention headaches for shippers, parcel delivery companies, and, of course, consumers.
