This month's winner of our "DCV Rocks" contest is Chris Weaver. Chris, a project engineer at Morrison Co., guessed one of two song-title references in our August issue: "Close to the edge" was the headline of an article about this year's CSCMP Edge conference. It appeared on page 3 of the issue, in our "Inbound" section.
There was also a second song title in that issue: "The heat is on," which was part of the headline "For DCs, the (hiring) heat is on" on page 29 of the August issue.
"Close to the edge" is the title track from a 1972 album by the British progressive rock band Yes. In classic art-rock style, the song clocks in at more than 18 minutes and begins with soothing sounds of of birdsong, rushing water, and wind chimes before a dissonant guitar breaks in. The track is divided into four movements and takes up the entire first side of the LP. It's been revived in the 21st century, having been covered at least twice—by the British band Nick Awde & the Desert Hearts in 2010 and by the Japanese group Ruinzhatova in 2003. "The heat is on" was a solo hit by Glenn Frey, formerly of the mega-successful 1970s rock group the Eagles. It was recorded for the 1984 movie Beverly Hills Cop and reached number 2 on the Billboard charts. In an interview with talk-show host Tavis Smiley, Frey said he recorded the vocals and guitar for the song in two days and received about $15,000 for it. Frey died in 2016 at the age of 67.
