Yes! We have a winner for our August DCV Rocks contest

There were two possible answers to our August contest, but only one winner; submit responses for the September issue by Oct. 15.

This month's winner of our "DCV Rocks" contest is Chris Weaver. Chris, a project engineer at Morrison Co., guessed one of two song-title references in our August issue: "Close to the edge" was the headline of an article about this year's CSCMP Edge conference. It appeared on page 3 of the issue, in our "Inbound" section.

There was also a second song title in that issue: "The heat is on," which was part of the headline "For DCs, the (hiring) heat is on" on page 29 of the August issue.

"Close to the edge" is the title track from a 1972 album by the British progressive rock band Yes. In classic art-rock style, the song clocks in at more than 18 minutes and begins with soothing sounds of of birdsong, rushing water, and wind chimes before a dissonant guitar breaks in. The track is divided into four movements and takes up the entire first side of the LP. It's been revived in the 21st century, having been covered at least twice—by the British band Nick Awde & the Desert Hearts in 2010 and by the Japanese group Ruinzhatova in 2003. You can listen to Yes' original version of the song, along with the rest of the album's tracks, and read lead singer Jon Anderson's movement-by-movement commentary on Yes's website.

"The heat is on" was a solo hit by Glenn Frey, formerly of the mega-successful 1970s rock group the Eagles. It was recorded for the 1984 movie Beverly Hills Cop and reached number 2 on the Billboard charts. In an interview with talk-show host Tavis Smiley, Frey said he recorded the vocals and guitar for the song in two days and received about $15,000 for it. Frey died in 2016 at the age of 67.

DEADLINE FOR SEPTEMBER-ISSUE CONTEST IS OCT. 15

If you correctly guess what song is mentioned in our September issue, you'll be included in a drawing for a coffee sampler from Joey Kramer's Rockin' & Roastin' Organic Coffee. Send your guess to dcvrocks@dcvelocity.com by midnight Pacific time on Sunday, Oct. 15. For a hint, see the table of contents on page 9 of our September print edition—or look it up in our digital version or on our mobile app.

Logistics industry growth slowed in December

Logistics industry growth slowed in December due to a seasonal wind-down of inventory and following one of the busiest holiday shopping seasons on record, according to the latest Logistics Managers’ Index (LMI) report, released this week.

The monthly LMI was 57.3 in December, down more than a percentage point from November’s reading of 58.4. Despite the slowdown, economic activity across the industry continued to expand, as an LMI reading above 50 indicates growth and a reading below 50 indicates contraction.

DHL: small businesses wary of uncertain times in 2025

As U.S. small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face an uncertain business landscape in 2025, a substantial majority (67%) expect positive growth in the new year compared to 2024, according to a survey from DHL.

However, the survey also showed that businesses could face a rocky road to reach that goal, as they navigate a complex environment of regulatory/policy shifts and global market volatility. Both those issues were cited as top challenges by 36% of respondents, followed by staffing/talent retention (11%) and digital threats and cyber attacks (2%).

Demand for warehouse space cooled off slightly in fourth quarter

The overall national industrial real estate vacancy rate edged higher in the fourth quarter, although it still remains well below pre-pandemic levels, according to an analysis by Cushman & Wakefield.

Vacancy rates shrunk during the pandemic to historically low levels as e-commerce sales—and demand for warehouse space—boomed in response to massive numbers of people working and living from home. That frantic pace is now cooling off but real estate demand remains elevated from a long-term perspective.
