IWLA names Paul Verst for logistics leadership award

Warehouse industry group also honors two for service to the trade group.

The International Warehouse Logistics Association (IWLA) honored three logistics-industry leaders with service awards during the group's annual meeting last month.

IWLA named Paul T. Verst, president and CEO of Walton, Ky., third-party logistics (3PL) and supply chain management company Verst Group Logistics Inc., as the recipient of its Jock Menzies Distinguished Service and Leadership Award.

The industry group thanked Verst for serving as IWLA chairman in 2013-2014 and for leading the search to name a successor, new chairman Mark DeFabis said in a March 15 ceremony during the group's business meeting at the 2016 IWLA Convention and Expo in Orlando, Fla.

The award, first bestowed in 1996, was dedicated in 2014 to John T. "Jock" Menzies, cofounder and former president of the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN), who passed away in 2013.

In other news, IWLA named two winners for the inaugural presentation of its Pinnacle Award, recognizing service performed by an individual from an IWLA member organization for other members.

Ann Christopher, vice president and general counsel of the Chattanooga 3PL Kenco, was honored for her work leading the IWLA Insurance and Legal Committee as it revised sample templates, documents, and contracts for IWLA members' reference.

The Pinnacle Award was also granted to fellow IWLA Insurance and Legal Committee member Kevin Phillips, a partner at transportation industry law firm Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson, and Feary in Chicago.

Securing the last mile

Although many shoppers will return to physical stores this holiday season, online shopping remains a driving force behind peak-season shipping challenges, especially when it comes to the last mile. Consumers still want fast, free shipping if they can get it—without any delays or disruptions to their holiday deliveries.

One disruptor that gets a lot of headlines this time of year is package theft—committed by so-called “porch pirates.” These are thieves who snatch parcels from front stairs, side porches, and driveways in neighborhoods across the country. The problem adds up to billions of dollars in stolen merchandise each year—not to mention headaches for shippers, parcel delivery companies, and, of course, consumers.
