Annual supply chain conference attracts over 2,000 attendees

Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals uses the event to recognize award winners, new board of directors.

More than 2,600 supply chain professionals packed the halls of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, from Sept. 21 to Sept. 24 for the 2014 Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals' (CSCMP) Annual Global Conference.

The Annual Global Conference is one of the world's largest supply chain educational events with more than 120 track sessions. In addition, it is the association's annual business meeting. CSCMP uses the conference as an opportunity to hand out its most prestigious awards and to announce its elected officers and members of its Board of Directors for the year.


The following awards were announced at the meeting:

  • Mike Regan, TranzAct Technologies Inc.'s chief of relationship development, received the 2014 Distinguished Service Award for significant achievements in the logistics and supply chain management professions.
  • Susan Conley, program specialist at Caterpillar Inc., and Mengxiao (Michelle) Zhang, team lead, lean logistics and operations at LeanCor Supply Chain Group, were awarded with the Emerging Leader Award, which was created to recognize outstanding supply chain management and logistics professionals, age 30 and under.
  • William Schmidt, assistant professor of operations in the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, was recognized with the 2014 Doctoral Dissertation Award for his research titled **ital.{Supply Chain Disruptions and the Role of Information Asymmetry.} The Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually to the author of a doctoral dissertation that "demonstrates significant originality and technical competence while contributing to the logistics and supply chain knowledge base."

CSCMP also announced this year's elected officers. Theodore (Ted) P. Stank, Bruce Chair of Logistics and Supply Chain Management at The University of Tennessee, was elected to the office of chair. Heather L. Sheehan, vice president, indirect sourcing and logistics, Danaher Corp., was named immediate past chair. Kevin F. Smith, president and CEO, Sustainable Supply Chain Consulting, was named board chair elect. Mary C. Long, vice president logistics and network planning, Domino's Pizza LLC, was elected to the office of board vice chair. Remko van Hoek was elected secretary and treasurer. He recently joined the Walt Disney Co. as its senior vice president, sourcing and procurement.

Global logistics real estate rents drooped in 2024 as an overheated market reset after years of outperformance, according to a report from real estate giant Prologis.

By the numbers, global logistics real estate rents declined by 5% last year as market conditions “normalized” after historic growth during the pandemic. After more than a decade overall of consistent growth, the change was driven by rising real estate vacancy rates up in most markets, Prologis said. The three causes for that condition included an influx of new building supply, coupled with positive but subdued demand, and uncertainty about conditions in the economic, financial market, and supply chain sectors.

The Port of Savannah received four collossal new electric ship-to-shore cranes on Saturday, bringing its total to eight and soon enabling the Georgia facility’s Ocean Terminal to service two vessels simultaneously.
