WERC, DC VELOCITY team up to run WIRE 2010

Trade show featuring wide array of warehouse-related software, equipment, and services will be held in conjunction with group's annual conference in Anaheim, Calif., in May.

The Warehousing Education and Research Council (WERC) and DC VELOCITY have teamed up to present WIRE 2010, the companion trade show to WERC's annual conference.

The partnership unites the leading logistics industry association focusing on warehousing and distribution with the logistics market's most successful media brand. WERC and DC VELOCITY executives said in a joint statement. "Combining resources will allow WERC and DC VELOCITY to take the show to the next level, enhancing its value for attendees and exhibitors alike," said Gary Master, publisher of**{DC Velocity,} in a statement.

WERC launched WIRE (Warehousing Industry Resources Event) in 2004 at its annual conference in Atlanta. The show is unique in the logistics field in that it is designed to foster an atmosphere conducive to education, networking, information sharing, and open discussion between exhibitors and attendees.

Attendees at the show can visit with leading suppliers of the products and services they need to drive efficiency in their logistics operations. Industry suppliers have the opportunity to assess attendees' business needs, demonstrate their products, show promotional videos, and exchange information with existing and prospective customers.

"We have seen steady growth each year since our first WIRE event, and the feedback has been tremendous from both our attendees and the exhibitors," said WERC CEO Michael Mikitka in the statement. "We wanted to take the show to the next level and recognized that the best way to do it would be to partner with the leading media brand in the market. That pointed us directly to DC VELOCITY."

"The assets and resources of WERC and DCV mesh together perfectly," said Master. "Success is all about driving value, and by combining forces we believe we can offer a better return on investment for both attendees and exhibitors than any other trade show focusing on logistics."

WIRE 2010 will be held in conjunction with WERC's annual conference in Anaheim, Calif., which takes place May 16-19. More information about the event will be released in the days and weeks ahead. For updates, visit www.werc.org and click on the "conference" link.

Dock strike: Shippers seek ways to minimize the damage

As the hours tick down toward a “seemingly imminent” strike by East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers, experts are warning that the impacts of that move would mushroom well-beyond the actual strike locations, causing prevalent shipping delays, container ship congestion, port congestion on West coast ports, and stranded freight.

However, a strike now seems “nearly unavoidable,” as no bargaining sessions are scheduled prior to the September 30 contract expiration between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) in their negotiations over wages and automation, according to the transportation law firm Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary.
