Online tips for wholesaler-distributors

New blog offers wholesaler-distributors ideas on making it through the recession.

Wholesaler-distributors who are looking for a few good ideas on managing through the current recession can now find them online. The Council for Research on Distributor Competitiveness (CRDC) has launched a monthly blog called "Managing in an Uncertain Economy." It appears online at nawinstitute.blogspot.com and is also accessible through the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors' NAW SmartBrief e-newsletter.

Each blog entry—essentially a full-length article with accompanying graphics—focuses on best practices that can make an immediate difference for wholesale distribution firms. The first installment features Dr. Barry Lawrence of Texas A&M University discussing inventory stratification. The second, by Dr. Lawrence and colleague Dr. Malini Natarajarathinam, addresses customer segmentation. The CRDC was created by the NAW Institute for Distribution Excellence and the Supply Chain Systems Laboratory at Texas A&M.

Securing the last mile

Although many shoppers will return to physical stores this holiday season, online shopping remains a driving force behind peak-season shipping challenges, especially when it comes to the last mile. Consumers still want fast, free shipping if they can get it—without any delays or disruptions to their holiday deliveries.

One disruptor that gets a lot of headlines this time of year is package theft—committed by so-called “porch pirates.” These are thieves who snatch parcels from front stairs, side porches, and driveways in neighborhoods across the country. The problem adds up to billions of dollars in stolen merchandise each year—not to mention headaches for shippers, parcel delivery companies, and, of course, consumers.
