alliances: who's sealed a deal

  • Beginning of a beautiful friendship. Cosmetics retailer Sephora has implemented RedPrairie's WMS in its new Salt Lake City distribution center. The warehouse management system will oversee Sephora's multichannel distribution operations, including direct shipments to stores.
  • 60+ and counting. The Miami Herald Media Co. has renewed its contract for dedicated contract carriage transportation services with Ryder System. Ryder manages the delivery of the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald from its client's printing plant in Miami to 18 distribution centers throughout South Florida. The new three-year agreement extends an ongoing relationship between Ryder and the Miami Herald Media Co. that began in 1945.
  • Coke is IT. Coca-Cola Enterprises has deployed several applications from JDA Software's Space & Category Management solution suite. The applications include JDA Space Planning, JDA Space Automation, JDA CategoryAdvisor, and JDA Intactix Knowledge Base. The software is designed to provide a platform for optimized planning.
  • Traffic watch. The McLane Co., one of the world's largest food-service distributors and grocery wholesalers, will implement the Retalix Traffic Management solution at 19 grocery DCs across the country. The inbound freight management system will be deployed with an integrated Retalix Web Tendering module that gives users online access to McLane's community of carriers to obtain the best freight rates and services.
  • Sealing the deal. DHL Express has signed a three-year contract extension with Trelleborg Sealing Solutions. Trelleborg is one of Europe's leading suppliers of precision sealing products to the industrial, automotive, and aerospace markets. DHL Express has worked with Trelleborg for the past six years, mainly by providing its client with time-and day-definite trucking service.
  • Cool combo. Glacier Computer and WAV Inc. have entered into a strategic alliance in which WAV will offer its clients Glacier's Everest and Ridgeline series of industrial computers. Chicago-based WAV is a value-added distributor of mobile computing and data-collection systems.
  • Military intelligence. The U.S. Army has selected a number of technology companies to fill a $75 million contract for passive RFID products. The contractors include Odin Technologies, SRA, Unisys, KTS Solutions, Intermec, Zebra, Sirit, OATSystems, and IBM. Together, they will provide a full range of hardware, software, and services for the Army's RFID logistics needs.
  • Serial cereal. Kellogg is implementing I.D. Systems' Wireless Asset Net industrial vehicle management system at a manufacturing and distribution facility in Battle Creek, Mich. The Battle Creek operation will be the second Kellogg facility to use the I.D. Systems solution.
  • Convenient choice. J. Polep Distribution Services, a New England-based distributor to convenience stores, has upgraded its Retalix Power Enterprise ERP system and installed the suite's warehouse management module. The distributor will use the warehousing software, Retalix Power Warehouse, to manage all aspects of its route-based, multistop distribution operations.
  • Collaborative effort. Arpac, a packaging equipment supplier, and GRSI, which provides software integration and warehouse control system services, have teamed up in a joint venture known as AG Integrators (AGI). AGI is designed to meet the in-motion packaging fulfillment needs of both retailers and manufacturers.
  • Picked a winner. GTech Printing Corp., a company that produces scratch-off lottery tickets, has contracted with TriFactor for an Instant Ticketing Packaging System. The material handling system, designed for a new GTech printing and distribution center in Lakeland, Fla., includes conveying, sorting, and wrapping equipment. TriFactor specializes in the design and installation of material handling solutions.
  • French front. NYK Logistics has installed warehouse management software from Manhattan Associates at its facility in Saint Quentin Fallavier, France. NYK will use the software to manage the distribution of industrial trucks, parts, and other products to 75 French dealerships on behalf of its client Komatsu Ltd.

Air cargo carriers enjoy 24% rise in average spot rates

The global air cargo market’s hot summer of double-digit demand growth continued in August with average spot rates showing their largest year-on-year jump with a 24% increase, according to the latest weekly analysis by Xeneta.

Xeneta cited two reasons to explain the increase. First, Global average air cargo spot rates reached $2.68 per kg in August due to continuing supply and demand imbalance. That came as August's global cargo supply grew at its slowest ratio in 2024 to-date at 2% year-on-year, while global cargo demand continued its double-digit growth, rising +11%.

Congressional gridlock and election outcomes complicate search for labor

Worker shortages remain a persistent challenge for U.S. employers, even as labor force participation for prime-age workers continues to increase, according to an industry report from labor law firm Littler Mendelson P.C.

The report cites data showing that there are approximately 1.7 million workers missing from the post-pandemic workforce and that 38% of small firms are unable to fill open positions. At the same time, the “skills gap” in the workforce is accelerating as automation and AI create significant shifts in how work is performed.

Toyota picks vendor to control smokestack emissions from its ro-ro ships

Stax Engineering, the venture-backed startup that provides smokestack emissions reduction services for maritime ships, will service all vessels from Toyota Motor North America Inc. visiting the Toyota Berth at the Port of Long Beach, according to a new five-year deal announced today.

Beginning in 2025 to coincide with new California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards, STAX will become the first and only emissions control provider to service roll-on/roll-off (ro-ros) vessels in the state of California, the company said.

ATA survey: Truckload drivers earn median salary of $76,420

Truckload drivers in the U.S. earned a median annual amount of $76,420 in 2023, posting an increase of 10% over the last survey, done two years ago, according to an industry survey from the fleet owners’ trade group American Trucking Associations (ATA).

That result showed that driver wages across the industry continue to increase post-pandemic, despite a challenging freight market for motor carriers. The data comes from ATA’s “Driver Compensation Study,” which asked 120 fleets, more than 150,000 employee drivers, and 14,000 independent contractors about their wage and benefit information.
