alliances: who's sealed a deal

  • Tea for two. Hornell Brewing Co., which markets the Arizona brand teas and other beverages, has hired Saddle Creek Corp. to manage logistics at a building currently under construction at Saddle Creek's campus in Lakeland, Fla. Hornell will immediately occupy 200,000 square feet of the 486,000-square-foot building and will use additional space as needed on a seasonal basis. Once the facility is completed, Saddle Creek will help Hornell consolidate inventory at the new building and then manage the warehousing and fulfillment operations at the site.
  • Coming to their defense. The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has extended its contract for warehouse and distribution services at the Defense Distribution Center, Kuwait/Southeast Asia with Agility Defense & Government Services. Under the one-year contract, which extends a deal first signed in 2005, Agility will use its facilities in Kuwait to provide a complete warehouse management system to support operations in the Middle East. The contract is worth about $36 million annually or $180 million over five years.
  • Follow that cab. Interstate Distributor Co., a transportation services provider, is integrating DriverTech's DTScan In- Cab Scanning systems into its fleet. By using DTScan, which allows drivers to scan and capture documents from within the cab, the company can speed up billing and eliminate wait time.
  • Rock, paper ... Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A. is now the nation's sole distributor of Aichi scissor lifts. Toyota Aichi dealers will offer a line-up of aerial work lifts designed for both indoor and outdoor applications.
  • Seeing Red. Tesco, an international grocery and general merchandise retail chain headquartered in Britain, is implementing RedPrairie's Enterprise Workforce Management Solution to align its customer traffic with its employee scheduling. Tesco is one of the world's largest retailers, with some 350,000 employees and 30 percent of the grocery market in the U.K.
  • Securing the deal. Master Halco Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of perimeter security and fencing products, has awarded a dedicated contract carriage and transportation management contract to Ryder System. Under the agreement, Ryder will assume the management of Master Halco's private fleet, which operates at 48 facilities in the United States and six in Canada. The contract covers the management of 116 vehicles and drivers, as well as preventative and programmed maintenance.
  • Raising their voices. Sadia, one of Brazil's largest pork and poultry processors, is implementing a voice solution from topVOX Corp. at several of its distribution centers. The topVOX voice system will integrate directly with Sadia's SAP warehouse management system and will be deployed on LXE's HX3 voice computers. The mobile computers are designed to operate in temperatures as low as -40 degrees F.
  • Green thumb. Container Centralen, a manufacturer of garden racks used for stacking plants and flowers in nurseries and home improvement stores, has selected OHL as its warehouse and distribution partner for Southern California. Container Centralen is based in Denmark and is new to the California market. OHL will handle the racks as well as some of the 25 million reusable crates and containers that Container Centralen makes and distributes worldwide for transporting plants.
  • The load down. Chicago-based Logistics Connections has signed an agreement to promote and sell Beewen mini-load cranes in the U.S. and Canadian markets. Beewen, which is based in Siegen, Germany, manufactures high-end mini-load cranes and other load-handling devices for moving totes and cartons.
  • Going for the gold. Spyder Active Sports, a ski-specialty brand and the outfitter for the U.S. Alpine Ski Team, is implementing Epicor's Retail Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product to streamline its retail operations.
  • Dealer delivery. Chrysler has hired Exel to provide dedicated delivery services from its Mopar Parts Distribution Center in Naperville, Ill. Exel will deliver the parts to 270 Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge dealers in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Iowa.
  • Paper's paperless platform. GT Nexus has deployed a global shipment visibility platform for Suzano Pulp & Paper, a large Brazilian paper exporter. The on-demand platform connects partners, translates incoming data, and provides Webbased applications that allow logistics managers in South America, North America, and Europe to monitor and control the movement of Suzano's global containerized freight.
  • Out with the cold. Henningsen Cold Storage is installing LeanLogistics' On-Demand transportation management system (TMS) to manage inbound and outbound transportation from its frozen and refrigerated distribution centers. The solution will allow Henningsen to centralize its transportation management activities at its distribution center in Scranton, Pa.

Supply chains continue to deal with a growing volume of returns following the holiday peak season, and 2024 was no exception. Recent survey data from product information management technology company Akeneo showed that 65% of shoppers made holiday returns this year, with most reporting that their experience played a large role in their reason for doing so.

The survey—which included information from more than 1,000 U.S. consumers gathered in January—provides insight into the main reasons consumers return products, generational differences in return and online shopping behaviors, and the steadily growing influence that sustainability has on consumers.

IT projects can be daunting, especially when the project involves upgrading a warehouse management system (WMS) to support an expansive network of warehousing and logistics facilities. Global third-party logistics service provider (3PL) CJ Logistics experienced this first-hand recently, embarking on a WMS selection process that would both upgrade performance and enhance security for its U.S. business network.

The company was operating on three different platforms across more than 35 warehouse facilities and wanted to pare that down to help standardize operations, optimize costs, and make it easier to scale the business, according to CIO Sean Moore.
