  • Pacer International, a logistics and freight transportation service provider, has made several key management appointments. Dan Avramovich has been named president of retail intermodal services, and Adriene Bailey has been named the new president of wholesale intermodal services. In addition, Val Noel, president of Pacer Cartage, has been named executive vice president of street operations; Doug Matthew has been promoted to executive vice president of network logistics; and Brian Kane has been promoted to senior vice president of corporate finance.
  • Lois Mills has been hired as the new human resources director at Forte. She previously worked for Ethicon Endo-Surgery and Procter and Gamble.
  • Hans Hickler has been appointed chief executive officer for DHL's Global Customer Solutions organization. Hickler will be responsible for customer relationship management of the group's largest customers worldwide. He is a 25-year veteran of the transportation, express, and logistics industry. He joined DHL in 2005 and was most recently CEO of DHL Express in the United States.
  • Intelligrated has hired Scott Gillette as district sales manager for the newly formed Minnesota District Office. Gillette comes to Intelligrated following 25 years in engineering and sales roles for Dematic and Rapistan.
  • Mary Jo Muoio, senior vice president of Ozburn-Hessey Logistics (OH Logistics), has been elected to a second term as president of the National Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association of America. Muoio is the first female president to lead the Washington, D.C.-based organization, which represents nearly 800 member companies in international trade. Also, Brené Blake has joined OH Logistics as senior vice president of strategic finance, planning, and development for its Barthco International division. Blake comes to OH Logistics from Burger King Corp., where he was senior director of finance and MIS for Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Saddle Creek, a third-party logistics company, has appointed Tom Collins director of marketing. Collins comes to his new position with more than 18 years of experience in both consumer and business-to-business marketing. He most recently was senior manager of marketing for FedEx Freight.
  • Navman Wireless North America, a provider of vehicle tracking and fleet management solutions, has promoted Brian Chene to national sales manager for its Fleet Administrator Program. He had been western regional sales manager with Navman Wireless for the past two years.
  • Horizon Lines has named James Storey as its new director of investor relations and corporate communications. He will manage the ocean line's communications with the investment community and other key constituents. He comes to Horizon Lines from BlueLinx Holdings. Prior to that, he was a reporter covering the stock market for Dow Jones & Co. in New York.
  • Joseph Ginnetti has been promoted to vice president, sales for The Raymond Corp. He previously was manager of Raymond's business development group and brings to his new role over 30 years of sales management experience in the material handling industry.
  • The Port of Tacoma has made several staff changes. Martyn Adamson has been promoted to director of information technology. Steve DeRose has joined the port as purchasing manager. Tri Howard has been hired as records manager. And Lisa Rozmyn has been hired as environmental project manager-stormwater.
  • Moffatt & Nichol, a Long Beach, Calif.-based marine design engineering firm serving ports and harbors, has made two recent hires. Andres Buritica has been appointed business development manager for Latin America. Also joining the firm is Michael Praught as Gulf Coast energy-sector business development manager.
  • Valerie Rainey has joined INTTRA as chief financial officer. INTTRA is an e-commerce pOréal for the ocean freight industry. Rainey brings to her new post experience in e-commerce, strategic alliances, operations, and finance. Before joining INTTRA, Rainey was director of finance at Pitney Bowes' international mail services division.
  • Eastern Connection has hired two industry professionals. Christine Fay has been hired as marketing manager and Jonah Lerner is the company's new pricing analyst. Eastern Connection is the largest regional parcel carrier on the East Coast.

Report: 65% of consumers made holiday returns this year

Supply chains continue to deal with a growing volume of returns following the holiday peak season, and 2024 was no exception. Recent survey data from product information management technology company Akeneo showed that 65% of shoppers made holiday returns this year, with most reporting that their experience played a large role in their reason for doing so.

The survey—which included information from more than 1,000 U.S. consumers gathered in January—provides insight into the main reasons consumers return products, generational differences in return and online shopping behaviors, and the steadily growing influence that sustainability has on consumers.

IT projects can be daunting, especially when the project involves upgrading a warehouse management system (WMS) to support an expansive network of warehousing and logistics facilities. Global third-party logistics service provider (3PL) CJ Logistics experienced this first-hand recently, embarking on a WMS selection process that would both upgrade performance and enhance security for its U.S. business network.

The company was operating on three different platforms across more than 35 warehouse facilities and wanted to pare that down to help standardize operations, optimize costs, and make it easier to scale the business, according to CIO Sean Moore.
