alliances: who's sealed a deal

  • A river runs through it. RiverOne, a provider of supply chain software and services, has acquired Softchain, a supplier of collaborative supply chain planning software designed to control the flow of materials across extended manufacturing supply chains. Details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

    The Softchain supply chain planning products enable customers to aggregate and communicate demand signals to all supply chain partners, analyze the impact of constantly changing demand and supply conditions, and continually synchronize material flow to balance demand. The Softchain planning products will be integrated with RiverOne's transaction execution products, collaborative backbone and comprehensive XML connectivity capabilities.
  • Livin' (extra) large. XL Parts, one of the fastest-growing members of the National Pronto Association, recently deployed a virtual inventory management solution from Custom Technology Solutions (CTS). The application, which will help XL Parts manage inventory across its multiple locations, is accessible online though an application service provider (ASP) model. XL Parts is a leading distributor of automotive parts and makes an extensive inventory of products from its 20 distribution locations available to its installer customers. The CTS inventory management and forecasting system applies sophisticated algorithms to XL Parts' inventory data and provides the distributor with detailed intelligence on the geographical and seasonal movement of parts.

ChemLogix LLC, a provider of integrated logistics solutions for the chemical industry, announces that Sartomer Co., a global supplier of specialty chemicals, has been successfully integrated into ChemLogix's Transportation Management Center (TMC). ChemLogix analyzed Sartomer's supply chain and developed a logistics solution tailored to its business needs, reportedly resulting in significant cost reductions.
  • Two heads are better. KnowledgeStorm, a provider of IT product, service and market information, and Aberdeen Group, a market research and consulting services firm, have announced a strategic partnership to provide their respective users with high-value content and tools aimed at reducing the risks associated with critical technology buying decisions.
  • Hub-ba, hub-ba. Hub Group Inc. and Velant Inc. have launched a strategic alliance to provide seamless transportation planning and execution programs for their private-fleet clients. Hub Group and Velant will share responsibilities for delivering and managing this joint service. Hub Group, headquartered in Downers Grove, Ill., is a non-asset-based third-party logistics provider (3PL), and Velant, based in Atlanta, Ga., is a high-tech provider of transportation planning solutions. The alliance combines Hub Group's long history of transportation operations expertise with Velant's next-generation optimization technology.
  • New reseller, eh? Intermec Technologies Canada Ltd. has named EMJ Data Systems Ltd. an authorized distributor of Intermec products. EMJ will offer Intermec's complete hardware product line to its network of resellers throughout Canada. Under the distributor agreement, EMJ will stock Intermec products and provide order processing, delivery and technical support services. EMJ also will offer training and service contracts on Intermec equipment, from mobile computers and wireless systems to bar-code printers.

Supply chains continue to deal with a growing volume of returns following the holiday peak season, and 2024 was no exception. Recent survey data from product information management technology company Akeneo showed that 65% of shoppers made holiday returns this year, with most reporting that their experience played a large role in their reason for doing so.

The survey—which included information from more than 1,000 U.S. consumers gathered in January—provides insight into the main reasons consumers return products, generational differences in return and online shopping behaviors, and the steadily growing influence that sustainability has on consumers.

Global third-party logistics service provider (3PL) CJ Logistics experienced this first-hand recently, embarking on a WMS selection process that would both upgrade performance and enhance security for its U.S. business network.
