alliances: who's sealed a deal

  • At home in the DC. Viastore systems recently installed a new automated storage and retrieval system in IKEA's new distribution center in Savannah, Ga. The 13-aisle system stores about 81,000 pallets of finished goods for the home furnishings retailer. Viastore also supplied the unit-load pallet conveyor that feeds the storage system.
  • Pass the chips. Snack food manufacturer Herr Foods has installed new bar-code equipment from Accu-Sort Systems. The installation includes laser bar-code scanners and production counting software in the production and inventory areas, as well as laser bar-code scanners and order management software in the ordering and shipping areas.
  • Listen up. Albert Heijn, the top food retailer in the Netherlands, has successfully deployed Voxware's voice picking software in its four regional distribution centers. The company also plans to implement the Voxware software in its two national DCs within the next few months. As many as 5,000 users are expected to use the voice system, making this installation the largest voice application to date in the Netherlands.
  • Ready to ship. Kewill has signed a value-added reseller agreement with ADSI, a systems integrator of automated supply chain transportation systems. Under the arrangement, ADSI will distribute, implement, and support Kewill Flagship, Kewill's enterprise shipping management software solution.
  • Cargo to go. CargoWise, a company that provides integrated international supply chain logistics management systems, has formed a strategic alliance with the Descartes Global Logistics Network (GLN). Descartes GLN is a multimodal network of transportation companies and customers who interchange logistics information and services. The alliance offers these logistics service providers and their customers increased management capabilities and greater visibility of their global supply chains.
  • Express lane. DHL has been chosen by fashion apparel retailer Chico's FAS as its direct-to-consumer delivery service provider. Under the deal, DHL will handle deliveries for the retailer's online and catalog sales business, and provide U.S. domestic and international express services to support the company's retail distribution network.
  • The cold hard facts. Nordic Cold Storage, a national temperature-controlled warehousing and transportation company, has installed RedPrairie's Warehouse Management Solution. The software will help Nordic better control its inventory, including tracking and tracing items.
  • Time to ketchup. H.J. Heinz has licensed the JDA Dynamic Demand Response solution to improve visibility into its North American supply chain. The software will help H.J. Heinz view its operations and improve inventory deployment, replenishment planning, and forecasting.
  • Threat detector. QinetiQ North America (QNA) has teamed up with VeriTainer Corp. to provide its radiation scanning solutions to ports worldwide. The crane-mounted VeriSpreader devices scan containers in real time for dangerous radiation as they are being loaded and unloaded from container ships. The deal joins VeriTainer's technology with QNA's systems engineering and data analysis capabilities to deliver a solution that provides high security while allowing the free flow of commerce.
  • Heavy metal. D&S Manufacturing, a producer of metal components and subassemblies, has installed Epicor's Vantage enterprise resource planning solution. The Epicor software will help D&S manage work flow and operations, including quoting, production, planning, order filling, logistics, billing, and payroll.
  • Cost control. Management Dynamics, a specialist in global trade solutions, is aligning itself with CombineNet, an advanced sourcing solutions provider, to give clients effective tools for managing the escalating costs of global transportation. The combined solution provides a management system to automate the complete procure-to-pay process for airfreight and sea-freight operations.
  • Jammin'. The J.M. Smucker Co., the well known maker of jellies, spreads, and other food products, has implemented Terra Technology's demand-sensing software companywide to improve short-term weekly forecast accuracy. The software analyzes daily demand signals and applies advanced mathematics to reduce forecast errors.

Supply chains continue to deal with a growing volume of returns following the holiday peak season, and 2024 was no exception. Recent survey data from product information management technology company Akeneo showed that 65% of shoppers made holiday returns this year, with most reporting that their experience played a large role in their reason for doing so.

The survey—which included information from more than 1,000 U.S. consumers gathered in January—provides insight into the main reasons consumers return products, generational differences in return and online shopping behaviors, and the steadily growing influence that sustainability has on consumers.
