  • Star tech. For the third consecutive year, Menlo Worldwide has been named to the InformationWeek 500, a prestigious listing of the most innovative users of information technology in the United States. The company was recognized for its collaboration with customers to provide real-time supply chain visibility and for leadership in helping businesses achieve operational excellence with their global supply chains.
  • Auto acclaim. Ryder System Inc. has been named Supplier of the Year by Benteler Automotive, a supplier of ready-to-install modules, components and parts to car manufacturers worldwide. Ryder was recognized for its leadership in driving continuous improvements throughout Benteler's North American supply chain operations and for providing quality logistics engineering and customer service.
  • People's choice. Tom Miller, president of Intermec Technologies Corp., has been chosen to receive one of the 2004 ID PEOPLE Awards, presented at the ID WORLD International Congress, an annual networking event for the RFID, cards and biometric industries. The ID PEOPLE Awards are presented to individuals who have distinguished themselves in 2004 for their vision, commitment, leadership and achievements in fostering the deployment of advanced ID concepts.
  • Bringing it home. The Home Depot has honored Hub Group as its Intermodal Carrier of the Year for 2004. Hub was honored for exceeding expectations by improving service levels, proactively solving rail and drayage issues, and providing excellent administrative assistance. Hub Group is a non-asset-based freight transportation management company with 30 offices throughout North America.
  • Taking a Q. TNT Logistics North America, a company that provides supply chain services to the automotive industry, has received the Ford Motor Co. "Q1" Award for quality services in its Canadian transportation operations. The "Q1" Award, the highest honor attainable for Ford's preferred suppliers, recognizes suppliers that have achieved a sustained level of excellence in customer satisfaction, while meeting Ford's systems and results requirements in quality, delivery and management. In addition, suppliers must have endorsements from Ford's key customers.
  • Going mobile. Psion Teklogix, a company that specializes in mobile computing, wireless data collection and RFID, has been honored by MobileVillage for its work in enterprise mobile technology. MobileVillage, a market development company and news service to the mobile community, honors companies with its Mobile Star Awards. This year, Psion Teklogix won two Gold Star awards in the categories of Deployment Transportation and Deployment Supply Chain; Silver Star Hardware and Bright Star Hardware awards for the Rugged Handheld categories; and a Silver Star Hardware award in the Customer Service category.

Air cargo carriers enjoy 24% rise in average spot rates

The global air cargo market’s hot summer of double-digit demand growth continued in August with average spot rates showing their largest year-on-year jump with a 24% increase, according to the latest weekly analysis by Xeneta.

Xeneta cited two reasons to explain the increase. First, Global average air cargo spot rates reached $2.68 per kg in August due to continuing supply and demand imbalance. That came as August's global cargo supply grew at its slowest ratio in 2024 to-date at 2% year-on-year, while global cargo demand continued its double-digit growth, rising +11%.

Congressional gridlock and election outcomes complicate search for labor

Worker shortages remain a persistent challenge for U.S. employers, even as labor force participation for prime-age workers continues to increase, according to an industry report from labor law firm Littler Mendelson P.C.

The report cites data showing that there are approximately 1.7 million workers missing from the post-pandemic workforce and that 38% of small firms are unable to fill open positions. At the same time, the “skills gap” in the workforce is accelerating as automation and AI create significant shifts in how work is performed.

Toyota picks vendor to control smokestack emissions from its ro-ro ships

Stax Engineering, the venture-backed startup that provides smokestack emissions reduction services for maritime ships, will service all vessels from Toyota Motor North America Inc. visiting the Toyota Berth at the Port of Long Beach, according to a new five-year deal announced today.

Beginning in 2025 to coincide with new California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards, STAX will become the first and only emissions control provider to service roll-on/roll-off (ro-ros) vessels in the state of California, the company said.

ATA survey: Truckload drivers earn median salary of $76,420

Truckload drivers in the U.S. earned a median annual amount of $76,420 in 2023, posting an increase of 10% over the last survey, done two years ago, according to an industry survey from the fleet owners’ trade group American Trucking Associations (ATA).

That result showed that driver wages across the industry continue to increase post-pandemic, despite a challenging freight market for motor carriers. The data comes from ATA’s “Driver Compensation Study,” which asked 120 fleets, more than 150,000 employee drivers, and 14,000 independent contractors about their wage and benefit information.
