  • Vrooom. Equipto, a company that provides storage solutions, shelving and racks, has signed an agreement to be the official automotive space utilization provider to the "Two Garage Guys" television show, seen on the Speed channel. Equipto will feature its new MechaniKing brand of automotive workbench and storage products on the show.
  • Data central. GT Nexus, a provider of Web-native supply chain software, has been selected by Carmichael International Service, a large independent full-service customs broker and freight forwarder, to implement a global "data hub" that will streamline the acquisition, consolidation and delivery of customer shipment information with Carmichael's transportation and logistics partners worldwide. GT Nexus will provide Web-hosted software and IT management services to collect and unify transportation and supply chain data from service providers. The company will then house it in a central database and provide a standardized feed to Carmichael's systems.
  • The Future is here. Witron has completed installation of its Order Picking System at Future Electronics' new distribution center in Memphis, Tenn. The system consists of 365,000 tote storage locations served by 23 tote stacking cranes that efficiently supply products to 23 picking workstations. Future Electronics is a leading provider of semi-conductors and other electronic components.
  • Hanging out a new shingle. Illinois-based Unified Barcode & RFID Inc. has become an authorized solution provider for both Datamax Corp. and Zebra Technologies. As a reseller, Unified Barcode & RFID can now incorporate Datamax and Zebra RFID offerings into the solutions created and implemented on behalf of the company's clients. Datamax RFID products enable users to update many internal applications, such as work-in-process and inventory management. Zebra is a leading provider of RFID technology, bar-code printers and label design and integration software.

Study: bridges may need more protection from ship collisions

Bridges in New York, California, and Georgia are among U.S. spans with the most traffic from the largest ships, leaving them at potential risk from collisions, according to a report from Johns Hopkins University that follows the collapse of Baltimore’s Key Bridge in March when it was struck by a drifting containership.

The team created the risk assessment model because they believe that chances are high for another such incident, and that risk to the Key Bridge amid modern shipping traffic had been underestimated. Now, the team hopes that decisionmakers can strategically direct safety investments to bridges most in need.

Container tracking software firm Gnosis gains cash backing

The supply chain visibility and execution software startup Gnosis Freight has gained new funding from private equity firm Vista Equity Partners, the firms said today.

The investment supports Gnosis’ mission to help logistics companies work together better across the entire ecosystem, the seven-year old, South Carolina-based firm said. Gnosis says its tech provides a smarter way to track and manage containers and to collaborate with logistics partners in a single location.

OOIDA cheers progress of bill to control freight fraud

An industry group for truck drivers is applauding Congress for passing a bill through a House committee that would enhance the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)’s ability to crack down on freight fraud.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) says the bipartisan legislation—called the Household Goods Shipping Consumer Protection Act—is needed because motor carriers are victimized through unpaid claims, unpaid loads, double brokered loads, or load phishing schemes on a daily basis.

CIG: Container ship fires could be reduced by better data

A coalition of freight transport and cargo handling organizations is calling on countries to honor their existing resolutions to report the results of national container inspection programs, and for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to publish those results.

Those two steps would help improve safety in the carriage of goods by sea, according to the Cargo Integrity Group (CIG), which is a is a partnership of industry associations seeking to raise awareness and greater uptake of the IMO/ILO/UNECE Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units (2014) – often referred to as CTU Code.
