ground breakers: who's building a new DC?

  • DHL has begun construction of its new East Coast Distribution Facility in Allentown, Pa. The facility will serve as DHL's primary Eastern DC, serving all major metropolitan areas in the region. It will feature state-of-the-art software technology as well as advanced sorting equipment that is capable of processing 40,000 letters per hour and 50,000 parcels per hour. It will have a base footprint of 290,000 square feet with an additional 200,000 square feet of mezzanine space. The $107 million facility is expected to be completed by the fall of next year and will eventually employ 340 people.

    In another move, DHL has announced its plans to invest $4 million over the next five years at DHL Columbus Commerce Park. The center operates as DHL's third-party logistics facility and is located at Rickenbacker Air Industrial Park near Columbus, Ohio. As the first phase of the expansion, DHL recently moved into a 190,000-square-foot facility at the complex. The facility will be outfitted with new material handling equipment and warehouse management systems.
  • VF Outdoor Inc. is building a new distribution center in Visalia, Calif. The facility, designed by Sedlak, will measure 800,000 square feet and is scheduled to begin operations in June. The DC will distribute the company's North Face and Reef brands of clothing and accessories. The facility is designed to achieve efficiencies in labor management and economies of scale in transportation. Sedlak is a supply chain consulting firm located in Highland Hills, Ohio.
  • Timex Corp. has expanded its Global Distribution Center in Cebu, Philippines. The $13 million investment will allow the facility to distribute 170,000 watches each day. Timex has had a presence in the Philippines for 26 years. Some 80 percent of all Timex watches distributed worldwide pass through Cebu.
  • Construction is under way on a 581,000-square-foot DC in Craven County, N.C., for BSH Home Appliances. German-owned BSH is the world's third-largest appliance supplier. The company has nearby manufacturing facilities that produce dishwashers, washers, dryers, cook tops, ranges and hoods.
  • Cooper Tire and Rubber Co. has just moved into a new distribution facility in Grand Prairie, Texas. The 400,000-square-foot DC features 96 dock doors, a new warehouse management system and specially constructed racks. The facility will serve Cooper's customers in the Southwest, South and Midwest.

54 container ships now wait in waters off East and Gulf coast ports

The number of container ships waiting outside U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports has swelled from just three vessels on Sunday to 54 on Thursday as a dockworker strike has swiftly halted bustling container traffic at some of the nation’s business facilities, according to analysis by Everstream Analytics.

As of Thursday morning, the two ports with the biggest traffic jams are Savannah (15 ships) and New York (14), followed by single-digit numbers at Mobile, Charleston, Houston, Philadelphia, Norfolk, Baltimore, and Miami, Everstream said.

Deutsche Bahn says sale of DB Schenker will cut debt, improve rail

German rail giant Deutsche Bahn AG yesterday said it will cut its debt and boost its focus on improving rail infrastructure thanks to its formal approval of the deal to sell its logistics subsidiary DB Schenker to the Danish transport and logistics group DSV for a total price of $16.3 billion.

Originally announced in September, the move will allow Deutsche Bahn to “fully focus on restructuring the rail infrastructure in Germany and providing climate-friendly passenger and freight transport operations in Germany and Europe,” Werner Gatzer, Chairman of the DB Supervisory Board, said in a release.

Reinke moves from TIA to IANA in top office

Transportation industry veteran Anne Reinke will become president & CEO of trade group the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) at the end of the year, stepping into the position from her previous post leading third party logistics (3PL) trade group the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), both organizations said today.

Reinke will take her new job upon the retirement of Joni Casey at the end of the year. Casey had announced in July that she would step down after 27 years at the helm of IANA.

The group, which honors U.S. military veterans through a range of civic outreach programs, is seeking trucking companies and professional drivers to help deliver wreaths to cemeteries across the country for its annual wreath-laying ceremony, December 14.

“Wreaths Across America relies on the transportation industry to move the mission. The Honor Fleet, composed of dedicated carriers, professional drivers, and other transportation partners, guarantees the delivery of millions of sponsored veterans’ wreaths to their destination each year,” Courtney George, WAA’s director of trucking and industry relations, said in a statement Tuesday. “Transportation partners benefit from driver retention and recruitment, employee engagement, positive brand exposure, and the opportunity to give back to their community’s veterans and military families.”
