  • The distinguished gentlemen. The American Society of Transportation and Logistics awarded the 2005 honorary DLP (Distinguished Logistics Professional) designation to three industry pros during its recent annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif. Named as DLPs were Douglas Duncan, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Freight; Edward Marien, professor emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Madison; and John Wiehoff, chief executive officer of C.H. Robinson Worldwide. These gents have been recognized for their mastery of the logistics profession and their career-long contributions to the industry.
  • Breathing easier. FedEx Express, along with its partner Environmental Defense, has been given the Blue Sky Award from WestStart-CALSTART, an advanced transportation technologies consortium. The Blue Sky Award recognizes companies that work to improve the environment. Environmental Defense and FedEx have been working together since 2000 to develop a low-emission, fuel-efficient delivery vehicle for FedEx Express. The hybrid electric vehicle they created, the OptiFleet E700, decreases particulate emissions by 96 percent and travels 57 percent farther on a gallon of fuel than a conventional vehicle. It also cuts fuel costs by more than one third.
  • All systems go. SYSCO Corp., a food-service provider to restaurants and institutions, has presented its National Warehouse of the Year Award to the Ozburn-Hessey Logistics facility in Fond du Lac, Wis. This is the third year in a row in which the Fond du Lac DC has been so honored. SYSCO and OH Logistics have been distribution partners for 28 years.
  • You're the tops. The Robart Companies have been honored by DiversityBusiness.com as being among the nation's top minority- and woman-owned companies and will be recognized as such at the sixth Annual Multicultural Business Conference held next month in Las Vegas. Robart is a third-party transportation and logistics provider based in Duluth, Ga.
  • Good work, eh? The Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, an Ottawa, Ontario-based business advocacy group, has presented a certificate of recognition to Toronto-based Radio Beacon Inc. for its warehouse management software. The certificate was awarded in the category of Innovation for Productivity Improvement during the association's recent conference and expo. The annual Canadian Innovation Awards encourage innovation and improvements in companies that add to the competitiveness of Canadian industry.

Port authorities across the country will get help in purchasing zero-emission equipment thanks to $3 billion in federal funding to decarbonize their operations, the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) said today.

Survey: retailers face a “highly challenging” holiday season

The majority of American consumers (86%) plan to reduce their holiday shopping budgets this year, with nearly half (47%) expecting to cut spending by more than 50% compared to last year, according to consumer research from Relex Solutions.

The forecast runs against some other studies that predict the upcoming holiday shopping season will be a stronger than last year, with higher sales and earlier shopping than 2023.

Electric yard truck provider Outrider plans to scale up its autonomous yard operations in 2025 thanks to $62 million in fresh venture capital funding, the Colorado-based firm said.
