  • Automated storage supplier Remstar International has promoted Ed Romaine to marketing vice president. In his new role, Romaine will be responsible for leading Remstar's marketing efforts and helping the company develop new products and designs. Before his promotion, Romaine ROMAINE was director of marketing.
  • Neil Smith has been appointed director, quality assurance for Con-way Freight-Central, based in Ann Arbor, Mich. With the promotion, Smith will be responsible for the implementation of all quality procedures, programs and new initiatives for the less-than-truckload carrier. He has been with Conway since 1996.
  • Tom Gripman has joined Carter & Burgess as senior project manager for the consulting firm's Logistics and Industrial Engineering Group. Gripman, who has 14 years of experience in DC planning and supply chain consulting, will specialize in projects serving distribution and retail GRIPMAN clients. Carter & Burgess is an engineering, architecture and consulting company based in Fort Worth, Texas.
  • Steel King Industries has hired Jeff Luczak as its lean manufacturing engineer. Luczak will be responsible for manufacturing efficiencies and cost reductions at Steel King's Stevens Point, Wis., and Rome, Ga., plants.
  • Ozburn-Hessey Logistics has hired Frank Eichler as its new executive vice president and general counsel. In this newly created role, Eichler will be responsible for contract administration and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance as well as advising the company on legal and policy issues.
  • Schneider Logistics is acquiring American Overseas Air Freight, an international freight forwarder and a licensed U.S. customs broker. The company specializes in the handling and shipping of imports and exports by air, ocean and truck.
  • York, Pa.-based Westfalia Technologies, which provides automated material handling systems, has merged with Toronto's Deam Co. The result is a new Westfalia division to be known as Deam Systems. The division will provide integrated material handling and packaging solutions, including case packing, empty case handling, stacking and de-stacking, conveyor and palletizing systems.
  • Software supplier Cadre Technologies has acquired another software company, LDS Corp., making it the largest software provider to the third-party logistics industry. Cadre will continue to sell and support products from both organizations.
  • Mark Jamieson has been tapped as the new executive vice president and chief financial officer for Ryder System Inc. He will lead the finance and audit, strategic sourcing, information technology, investor relations, and public affairs functions for Ryder, which offers transportation, logistics and supply chain management solutions worldwide.
  • A group of managers from Texas Instruments has purchased Intelligent Instrumentation from TI. Intelligent Instrumentation is a manufacturer of networked data acquisition and industrial data collection equipment headquartered in Tucson, Ariz. Intelligent Instrumentation was acquired by Texas Instruments when TI purchased its parent company, Burr-Brown Corp., in 2000.
  • KOM International, a supply chain consulting firm headquartered in Montreal, has appointed Allan Kohl as the company's president and chief executive officer. He will oversee global operations, which in addition to Montreal, include offices in Mexico City, Caracas, Bogota and Sao Paulo. Kohl, currently a senior partner at the firm, has been with KOM for more than 30 years.
  • Phil Quartel has been appointed director of distribution consulting for Fortna. Taking advantage of Quartel's logistics experience, Fortna is now offering network analysis studies as part of its services.
  • Martin Clark has been promoted to director of marketing and business development for FKI Logistex Manufacturing Systems North America. He previously was director, international and newspaper operations for FKI. Clark has been with FKI since 1999.
  • Transportation and logistics provider Pacer International has promoted Tom Shurstad to president. Shurstad was most recently president of Pacer Stacktrain, Pacer's wholesale intermodal transportation service provider. Tom Finkbiner now takes the reins at Pacer Stacktrain.
  • Hellmann Worldwide Logistics has appointed Julian Riches as chief financial officer of Hellman USA. He most recently worked for Exel Global Logistics. Riches fills the shoes of current CFO Dieter Kasprzyk, who will retire later this year.

NMFTA prepares to change freight classification rules in 2025

The way that shippers and carriers classify loads of less than truckload (LTL) freight to determine delivery rates is set to change in 2025 for the first time in decades, introducing a new approach that is designed to support more standardized practices.

Those changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) are necessary because the current approach is “complex and outdated,” according to industry group the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA).

Trucking sector ticked up slightly in August, but still negative

Buoyed by a return to consistent decreases in fuel prices, business conditions in the trucking sector improved slightly in August but remain negative overall, according to a measure from transportation analysis group FTR.

FTR’s Trucking Conditions Index improved in August to -1.39 from the reading of -5.59 in July. The Bloomington, Indiana-based firm forecasts that its TCI readings will remain mostly negative-to-neutral through the beginning of 2025.

OOIDA cheers federal funding for truck parking spots

A coalition of truckers is applauding the latest round of $30 million in federal funding to address what they call a “national truck parking crisis,” created when drivers face an imperative to pull over and stop when they cap out their hours of service, yet can seldom find a safe spot for their vehicle.

The Biden Administration yesterday took steps to address that problem by including parking funds in its $4.2 billion in money from the National Infrastructure Project Assistance (Mega) grant program and the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant program, both of which are funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
